Powwow Bear is a start-up Native American themed product company created by Michael J. Roberts (Oic'iya Hoksina), an enrolled member of Enemy Swim District of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate (Sioux Tribe) of the Lake Traverse Reservation in North and South Dakota.
Michael created the original Powwow Bear in 1998, and after many years of making prototypes, is finally sharing the Powwow Bear product line with you. There are two product lines in development, the Teddy Bear line and an illustrated Children's Book Series that explains the clothing, the historical and cultural significance of the clothing and regalia worn by the Bears.
OUR IDEA
The Powwow Bear products are an "About Us, By Us" story told about Native Americans by Native Americans. The products are geared toward children as an education tool to learn about the beautiful and rich history and culture of Native American Tribes in the United States. Since Michael is Dakota, we are starting with the Dakota Tribes first, and will be expanding our product line slowly and going Tribe-by-Tribe in the coming years.
OUR PRODUCTS
The first two bears are C'aske and Winona, the first-born son and daughter in the Dakota (Sioux) language. Check back often and collect all of our bears, designs, and product additions.
OUR PLAN
The first two bears, C'aske and Winona, are made in China, which is not where we want to be, but it is the start to our journey. The company is 100% Native American owned and operated with the long-term plan of moving production to the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation in South Dakota.
